Red yeast rice is the product of yeast cultivated on white rice. The yeast-rice mixture in powdered form is a staple food in Asia and has been used in traditional Chinese medicine. 

Red yeast rice contains compounds that help lower cholesterol levels. Among them is monacolin K, an ingredient also found in medicinal preparations for lowering cholesterol.
