Description
Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is a plant native to Europe and parts of Asia. Valerian root has a long history of use as a sedative. It appears that due to its sedative action on the nervous system, it was used as a traditional medicine as far back as the Roman era.
Today, valerian is used to improve sleep quality in people with sleep disorders, especially insomnia. It is also used for anxiety, stress and many other conditions.
Due to the chemical compounds present in valerian, these increase GABA levels in the nervous system while also stimulating GABA receptors. GABA is a messenger that helps regulate nerve impulses in the central nervous system, being one of the main neurotransmitters responsible for regulating sleep.
Valerian root may help reduce feelings of anxiety that occur in response to stressful situations.
