Hawthorn is a spiny shrub that grows wild along roadsides and is often used to create hedgerows throughout Europe. It can reach a height of 10 m, and in the past wreaths made from flowering hawthorn twigs were woven for weddings to bring happiness and fertility to the newlyweds or placed on infants' cradles to protect them from evil spirits. For medicinal purposes the flowers, leaves, branches and fruits of hawthorn are used. Both the fruits and the flowers are used to prepare infusions, capsules and tinctures.
