Frankincense is the resin of a tree that grows wild in Southeast Asia, used in traditional medicine for more than 4,000 years and which, over the past ten to twenty years, has become the subject of hundreds of modern medical studies. This plant is a true revelation in therapy, being used in the treatment of some of the most serious diseases of our time, such as cancer, asthma, memory and reasoning disorders, or chronic joint diseases. The range of conditions in which frankincense is successfully used is astonishingly large.
The standardized extract in boswellic acid is used; this substance must be present in a proportion of at least 40% for optimal therapeutic effects. There are also non-standardized frankincense extracts, but the results obtained with these are weak. Standardized frankincense extract has therapeutic uses, with demonstrated efficacy, in over 100 diseases, some very serious.
Frankincense and cancer
According to all research to date, boswellic acid from frankincense is one of the most active antitumor agents known. How does it act? By several pathways, but the best-known mechanism is the selective targeting of cancer cells. Unlike synthetic cytostatics, which affect both malignant and healthy cells, frankincense extract causes the destruction only of cells that have undergone mutations.
It is also worth noting the use of frankincense extract as an adjuvant in radiotherapy used in cancer. Specifically, this remedy reduces by 60% the edema that appears after therapeutic irradiation, helps protect healthy tissues, stimulates the removal of dead tissues and tissue fragments, as well as the overall recovery of the organism.
Frankincense and rheumatism
This plant is a true phenomenon in the fight against joint diseases. Taken internally, frankincense in extract form reduces joint pain and inflammation, increases joint flexibility, and raises exercise capacity (it has been shown, for example, to allow patients with rheumatoid arthritis or knee osteoarthritis to walk longer distances).
Frankincense, asthma, chronic bronchitis and pulmonary emphysema
A three-month treatment with frankincense extract, administered orally, reduces the allergic sensitivity of the middle and lower airways, clears excess secretions from the bronchial tree, and eases inhalation and exhalation.
Frankincense, depression and anxiety
A single dose of frankincense increases mental tone and the mind's readiness for activity, promptly eliminating states of obsessive sadness, apathy, and lack of initiative. Courses of several weeks with frankincense induce a state of psychological stability, preventing the appearance of fear states without apparent reason, as well as the occurrence of panic attacks.
Frankincense and benign breast tumors
Boswellic acid from frankincense, administered in 3-month courses, has the effect of reducing the inflammation and pain produced by benign breast formations, known as lumps (which can be adenomas, adenofibromas, fibrocysts). Also, frankincense extract standardized in boswellic acid reduces, over time, the size of benign breast tumors and dramatically decreases their risk of malignancy.
Frankincense and the liver
Frankincense extract protects the liver from the harmful effects of psychological stress, certain toxic substances (medications, alcohol, synthetic food additives, etc.), as well as from viruses. In patients with progressive chronic hepatitis, the administration of frankincense extract halts the liver fibrosis process and the progression toward cirrhosis.
Frankincense, the cardiovascular system and the heart
Three-month courses have the gift of preserving blood vessels (improving the flexibility and strength of vascular walls). It also prevents the formation of blood clots and inflammation of the veins (phlebitis). Regarding the heart, frankincense has protective effects, preventing perfusion disorders of the cardiac muscle and heart attacks.
Frankincense and diabetes
Systematic administration of frankincense extract leads to a gradual decrease in blood glucose in non–insulin-dependent diabetics. In all types of diabetics, orally taken frankincense has a particularly notable protective effect on the kidneys, liver and nervous system.
