Vitex agnus-castus is a shrub native to the Mediterranean Sea and Asia. Over time it has been used to reduce sexual desire.

The fruit and seeds of Vitex contain chemicals that appear to affect many hormones involved in the female reproductive cycle.

Vitex agnus-castus–based supplements are used for menstrual cycle–related conditions, such as breast pain and premenstrual syndrome. It is also used for bone fractures, infertility, menopausal symptoms and many other conditions, but there is not good scientific evidence to support most of these uses.

Vitex agnus-castus extract has beneficial effects on premenstrual syndrome and is recommended for women who have various hormonal imbalances.
