Red yeast rice is the product of yeast cultivated on white rice. The yeast-rice mixture in powder form is a staple food in Asia and has been used in traditional Chinese medicine.
Red yeast rice contains compounds that help lower cholesterol levels. Among them is monacolin K, an ingredient also found in pharmaceutical cholesterol-lowering preparations.
In recent years it has also been available as oral supplements, aimed at reducing cholesterol levels and the risk of cardiovascular disease. Research has shown the ability of red yeast rice to lower total blood cholesterol, LDL cholesterol (the 'bad' cholesterol) and triglyceride levels.
